Tips for Becoming a Better Listener
Some ways to change poor listening habits
· Concentrate on what is being said – content and intent · Observe facial expressions, eye direction and movement, body language (non-verbal behaviors) · Respond by using your eyes, voice, gestures, and posture to communicate empathy and understanding · Reflect the information you hear by repeating or paraphrasing it. · Elicit more information by asking questions · Control the desire to interrupt, pass judgment, or change the subject. · Control the desire to become distracted with cell phones ringing, PDA’s, lap tops, paper work, visitors in your office, etc. · Take advantage of the lag time between mental activity and speaking time to notice the speakers’ language and body language.
